The Fortuna Historical Commission was established and started meeting regularly in 1975, the same year the Depot Museum started operation. The first chairperson was Gene Weiss and one of the first commissioners was Leslie Suprey.

The five-member citizen board meets at an informal breakfast monthly and has the formal meeting on the third Wednesday of each odd-numbered month at seven PM in the Council Chamber at the Fortuna City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Board members administer the Depot Museum and are charged with the preservation of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Depot Building which houses the Museum. They also perform fund raisers such as receptions, socials, sales through the Museum store, and wreath sales during the holidays. The commission also determines what items are retained by the Museum, with much emphasis given to items relating to the Eel River Valley.
